Book review – House of Whispers

This is a book review for House of Whispers, the 5th book in the Ellie Jordan Ghost Trapper series by JL Bryan.

I’m a huge fan of this series, devouring the first four in record time. When I heard there was a 5th one on the way, I preordered it at once and I’m not ashamed to say that I squeaked with excitement when I saw it had been delivered.

As the name would suggest, Ellie Jordan, our heroine, traps ghosts for a living in the most haunted city in the world. She’s a great character, funny, stubborn and wise – cracking. You don’t see too much of that in this novel but it does build on earlier books in the series.

The supporting characters are great too, although apart from Stacey we don’t see much of the others. Stacey is a great character too. She’s funny in her own right, a little goofy and a little geeky, but an awful lot adorable.

This book was a lot darker and scarier than the previous books in the series. This was the first one to keep me awake at night and covers some really gruesome topics like human experimentation and cult philosophy.

I like that there’s an overall series arc too. Although the books can be read as standalone novels, each with an entire contained story, there are a few threads that tie them together. Ellie’s relationship with Michael is something that pops up every now and then with warm flashes of their characters. I love his slightly weird hobby. The other major thread is that Ellie’s boss wants to sell the business to a rival firm and Ellie doesn’t trust them or their methods.

Bryan’s books are always well constructed and immaculately edited, with plot lines that race along, packed with action and adventure.

I feel like this is a pivotal point for the series. It’s getting to that stage now where the situations are just so crazy that trying to better them by making them bigger and more impressive will tip the arc over the edge into ridiculous caricature. Bryan will either have to maintain the current level of haunting or strip it right back because there will need to be a lot more back story in the next one to cover all the changes in Ellie’s life if the business is sold.

Whatever happens, I guarantee that I’ll be preordering it as soon as the link goes live and will await it’s release with anticipation!
